Tahuantinsuyo means "the four united regions" in Quechua. Learn about the four suyos, the 13 Inca rulers, social structure, and the fall of the greatest empire in the Americas.
The word Tahuantinsuyo comes from Quechua: "Tawa" (four) and "Suyo" (region or territory), literally meaning "the four united regions." It was the name the Incas gave to their vast empire, centered on the city of Cusco, considered the "navel of the world."
The Tahuantinsuyo covered over 2 million km² during the 15th century, stretching from southern Colombia to central Chile and northwestern Argentina, becoming the largest empire in pre-Columbian America.
The Four Suyos of the Inca Empire
The empire was divided into four regions or "suyos," each oriented toward a cardinal direction from Cusco:
| Suyo | Direction | Territory | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antisuyo | Northeast | Amazon jungle | Rainforest region, rich in natural resources |
| Chinchaysuyo | Northwest | Northern Peru and southern Ecuador | Most populated and prosperous region |
| Contisuyo | Southwest | Southern Peru coast | Coastal deserts and fertile valleys |
| Collasuyo | Southeast | Highlands, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina | Largest region, included Lake Titicaca |
The central plaza of Cusco, Huacaypata (today's Plaza de Armas), was the point where the four main roads to each suyo converged.

Social Structure of the Tahuantinsuyo
Inca society had a well-defined hierarchical organization:
- The Inca — Supreme authority, considered son of the Sun (Inti). Ruled with absolute power.
- Royal Panaca — The Inca's royal family.
- Curacas — Nobles and local chiefs who administered provinces.
- Hatunruna — Common men, the base of society. Worked the land and paid tribute through the mita system.
- Mitimaes — Colonists relocated to new territories to consolidate Inca control.
- Yanaconas — Servants of the Inca and nobility.

Rulers of the Inca Empire
