3 ways to reach Palcoyo Mountain from Cusco: organized tour (from $42), public transport, or private car. Schedules, prices, day itinerary and altitude tips.

Palcoyo Mountain is the most accessible alternative to the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). It sits about 100 km southeast of Cusco, in the Canchis province, and its biggest advantage is that the final hike takes only 30 to 45 minutes along an almost flat trail. Here we explain the three ways to get there step by step, with schedules, prices, and an hour-by-hour itinerary so you make the most of your day.

The essentials at a glance

Way 2: On your own by public transport (the cheapest)

If you love adventure and want to save money, you can get there independently. It means an early start and combining bus + shared taxi.

Step by step

  1. Cusco → Checacupe (or Cusipata): head to the Vallecito Terminal or the southbound bus area. Take an intercity bus heading to Sicuani and ask to get off at Checacupe. It costs S/ 10-15 and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.
  2. Checacupe → Palcoyo community: in Checacupe's main square, hire a taxi or colectivo that climbs the dirt road to the trailhead (~40 km, 1 hour). Round trip costs S/ 100-130 per car (split it among your group).
  3. Final hike: from the parking area, 30-45 minutes to the main viewpoint.

Tip: leave Cusco before 5:00 a.m. The last return buses from Checacupe pass by mid-afternoon, so coordinate the return with your taxi driver. Bring cash in soles: there are no ATMs or stable signal up there.

Way 3: Private or rented car (maximum freedom)

If you drive on mountain roads, you can go at your own pace. The route is Cusco → Cusipata → Checacupe → Palcoyo along the Southern Interoceanic Highway, fully paved up to Checacupe; the last stretch is a graded dirt road.

  • Time: 3 to 3.5 hours one way
  • Recommendation: use a pickup or high-clearance car for the final dirt section

What to pack

  • Layered clothing: cold at dawn, warm at midday
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses (high-altitude sun is intense)
  • Trekking shoes with good grip
  • Water, snacks, and coca candies for the altitude
  • Waterproof poncho if traveling in the rainy season
  • Cash in soles for the entrance and extras

Final altitude tips

  1. Acclimatize first: spend at least 1 or 2 nights in Cusco before going up to 4,900 masl.
  2. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol the night before.
  3. Walk slowly: it's not a race; the trail is short but altitude is felt.
  4. Coca tea from early on helps with altitude sickness.

Palcoyo gives you several colorful mountains, a stone forest, and snow-peak views without Vinicunca's demanding hike. It is, without a doubt, the most relaxed way to experience the Andean rainbow.
